Adopting an animal requires making a long term commitment to its welfare and means that you will be responsible to ensure you provide for all the basic needs your adopted pet has. In particular the new Animal Welfare Act requires you to ensure: you provide your pet with a proper diet, including access to fresh water; it has suitable accommodation; it can express normal behaviour; it is protected from pain, suffering, injury and disease; and its need to be housed with, or apart from, other animals must be met.
When making your choice of pet you need to be prepared to look after it throughout its life. If you get a kitten or a puppy this could be 20 years or more and with a rabbit it may be 6 years or more. You also need to be ready for the unexpected - what will you do if your pet is hit by a car for example. Modern veterinary care means that it is possible to treat serious injuries and illnesses successfully, but such treatment can be complex and expensive. We recommend you insure your pet to assist in dealing with unexpected bills.
