NERVOUS CATS LOVE TOO!!!

Due to the type of work the RSPCA carries out, such as rescuing abandoned and stray animals, removing animals from what can be very unsuitable homes, and even rescuing abused or neglected animals. It does mean that a lot of the cats we have in our care have had very poor upbringing, where they have not only had competition for food but also very little love and attention.

These cats all need our help, yes they may take a little longer than most to settle into a new home, but with a little extra love and time they will blossom and grow into fantastic companions. The really good news is that these cats make fantastic companions to other cats. they love their company and will learn how to act and to do things from an existing cat. Including how to get you wrapped round their little paw!

When Custard Cream came into our care she was already 5 mths old, she came from a multi cat household, where we have dealt with over 50 cats so far. As with many cats from this sort of environment Custard Cream was very nervous and used to being handled. usually there are a couple of cats in these sorts of homes, the original cats, who are nice and friendly, then with every subsequent litter born, the cats get less and less handling from their owners and are more and more nervous.

This is Custard Creams story…..

Custard Cream when she first arrived in our care ( aka Nala)
“Day one we had Nala she hissed, scratched and climbed the curtains to get away from us, she had not been handled at all and was about 6 months old and terrified of humans. Over the next week we spent hours every day holding her (against her will) and giving her treats. She had her own room in the house and lots of places to hide in there. Gradually as she gained more confidence she would wander around the room whilst I sat reading and even sniff me!

She was terrified of everything so we had to show her everything very gently and calmly. We had another cat already and she loved him although he wasn’t so keen of her playful nature they do still curl up together occasionally. He was the only one in the beginning that she
would pay attention to though when he called her!

Every day now we make sure we hold her, kiss and cuddle her, we also check her ears, toes and mouth so she gets used to it if she ever has to go to the vet.

The meaning of this story is that yes the little kittens are very cute and cuddly in the pens but give a thought to the ones that are scared and hiding at the back, they only want to be loved and don’t know that mostly humans are friendly. Nala is now the most cuddly loving cat always coming to warm her feet on us and calling to us if we dare to leave the room! She is also great as she is fiercely independent and doesn’t mind if you aren’t around 24/7. I hope this gives someone pause for thought to go look again the pens and see if there is someone hiding that really wants a nice home too.” Anna & Nala
